Top 5 Christmas Games.

Ah, its that time of the year again, where Christmas trees have been decorated, house owners think it looks cool to obliterate their house with cheesy lights, and of course a visit from Saint Nick is drawing near. As ever there is nothing on the TV so I thought I would round up the top 5 Video Games with a Chirstmas theme.  So with out further ado, let us begin.

At umber one we have Christmas Nights on the Sega Saturn. Ok strictly speaking it wasn’t a specific Christmas game it was just a few graphical changes and some slight modifications to the basic mechanics. Still, it gave it even more magic than the magnificent original, still regarded as one of the best games on the Sega Saturn. Despite it being just cosmetic, its well worth checking out as its a million times better than the disappointing Wii version.

At number two we have Animal Crossing on the Nintendo DS. Again this is not a specific Christmas game, but when you have been playing it all year and it comes to December the 25th and you turn on your DS to water your fruit, you are greeted with a nice little christmas theme in the Animal Crossing world, Snow, lights on the tree and your neighbours giving you gifts, It was a perfect pixel christmas. (or if like me you were inpatient, you could change the DS’s time and date settings and experience christmas every day of the year).

At number three we have Home Alone The Video Game for the NES. The purpose of the game is to escape the Wet Bandits while bringing all the McCallister’s fortunes from the house down to the safe room in the basement. Once all items have been sent down the chute to the basement Kevin must make it past rats, bats, and ghosts he encounters in the basement then fight the spider king so he can make it to the safe room to lock away all his families riches. Doesn’t sound like much but was great fun to play, espciallly as the movies are always on a Christmas, it was perfect for getting you in the christmas spirit.

At number four we have Daze Before Christmas. unfortunitely this is not a Christmas take on the fantastic Skool Daze game, nooo, this is worse! All beware when Santa drinks the secret elixir and transforms into the evil Anti-Claus! (yes not very chirstmasy I know)

While Santa took his pre-flight nap the North Pole was invaded by a sinister gang of meanies bent on ruining Christmas for everyone. Those elves that didn’t run off were kidnapped along with the reindeer, and Santa slept though the whole thing! Typical! this was a simple run of the mill platformer that were 10 a penny back in the days of the 16 bit consoles. still a nice distraction while you wait for that turkey to cook (or is this the turkey?)

At number five we have South Park, released on the Playstation  and N64 it was basically a snow ball game (yep pretty random) but quite funny given that it was South Park yellow snow balls were the gross high light. Not the createst game in the world, but stalking you’re prey with snow ball in hand is just thing for the dull non snowy Christmases we have in this country.

There you have it, 5 games that celebrate the theme of Christmas. Not particularly out standing but nice to see the developers make and effort (cash in) on the festive period. Personally, what makes christmas gaming special is wondering which one of the hundreds you wrote on a list as a kid was the one you were going to get Christmas morning, that was always a great moment, and I still think the same applies today, I’m hoping to unwrap uncharted 2 this year, but who know’s it could be Modern Warfare 2 or perhaps something else. ahhh, the beauty of Christmas.

Love it! I playes Daze before Christmas and it had a festive jingly theme tune and then was two tons of pants. If we’re broadening it out to Christmas games that should have been then I’d have paid through the nose to have a Box of Delights SCUMM type game – Splendiferous!

Ahh Box of Delights, only ‘its’s a Wonderful life’ makes me think of Christmas more. A game would be good, but would probably turn out to be a first person shooter set in world war 2, as thats all we seem to get at the moment. sigh
